We finally had a fun night out on the town! Wednesday night, we decided to check out a little venue called the Nottinghill Arts Club. It was just a short walk from our flat and the weather was actually quite nice. We arrived and took one look around and realized how much we stuck out haha. This was a bar for the hipsters. People that just oooze style and musical knowledge. We made our way to get a glass a wine and then to the stage. The first band was quite good. They were a little loud but overall were interesting to listen to. After their set the second band began to set up and when the singer began to introduce the band he told the crowd that this was their farewell gig because they had just got signed in the United States!!!! We were beyond excited to hear them play. And they did not disapoint! They were amazing!! We danced and cheered with everyone else as they went through their set. The guitarist was sensational. After they had finished everyone liked them so much that the Brits started yelling, "One bloody more, one bloody more!" Apparently this is like out encore and slow clap haha. It was hilarious. They came out and played one more and when they were tearing down. We got the attention of the guitarist and asked him where they were going to be playing in the States? He instantly figured out we were from the States and was so excited to hear we loved them! He was soo nice! Their tour is starting in the South and will actually end in Chicago where they are making their CD in a couple of weeks. They are on itunes if any of you want to check them out, they are called The Hoodoo Scoundrels!
The next part of that weekend was not quite as fun. We spend the evening in Piccadilly Circus which is like the Times Square of London. This is where I had my first negative interaction with a local. My blondness sticks out A LOT here. This Italian man ran up to me and my roommate Karen yelling, "BLONDE BLONDE!" He grabbed my face and kissed me on the cheek and professed his love for me.... Needless to say I was not impressed and we just kept walking. Overall the night was fine though, its cool to see the lights.
The next evening proved to be a ton of fun and good food! We found a restaurant that is owned by the Rolling Stones, Bill Wyman!! It's called Sticky Fingers and it is very, very close to American food. We had the most amazing burgers, it felt like home. The funniest part of this night is that between the 6 of us we finished a bottle of ketchup... haha. Apparently it is a very American thing to use a lot of Ketchup and the waitress did seem to judge us a bit when she took away the empty bottle.
This week marked the first week I actually felt like I was in school. We had our first paper due, which is why it has taken me so long to update. It went fine and everything is turned in. Today marks the beginning of another weekend with less work to worry about. Therefore, we will be having a great time and I'm sure I'll have much more to report very soon!

Some Pictures but don't miss the blog below!
So much to talk about!
Well hello again,
I know it has been awhile since the last time, things have just been busy! This past weekend we traveled to the Queen's weekend home, Windsor Castle. Interestingly enough this sparked some conversation and question amongst all of us... I wondered what is the Royal Family's last name? (I will answer this question at the end of my post, because I am fairly sure none of you know and I want to leave you thinking about it hehe). The castle was unbelievable. Her Majesty was not in residence the day that we had out tour set up so we were able to see everything that is open to the public. When she is there her personal flag flies telling everyone there are certain restrictions. It was interesting because once we got into the Castle walls I noticed planes flying over. I got to thinking that this was rather odd seeing as where we're from no planes can fly over the Whitehouse. I asked our your guide about this and she said that if the Queen were there then Heathrow airport changes their flight patterns to avoid the castle.. she is a BIG deal. We spent the entire day walking around the castle and then around the town of Windsor. This town is where Prince William and Harry attended school. The shops were amazing and the pubs and restaurants were incredibly cute. I even got to have my first Fish and Chips! It was great, however they serve it with a side of Mushy Peas. I kid you not, Mushy Peas. Needless to say I sampled it and then left it in its pathetic little green mound on my plate.
Last night we attended the best play I have ever seen. It is called 39 Steps and is a parody of the Hitchcock film. It is played by just 4 actors who have to race around and play all of the different parts. I was laughing so incredibly hard I think I cried a little. It is an extreme comedy where they make intentional mistakes to add to the humor. I would absolutely love to see it again some time!
Classes have become increasingly interesting. My favorite so far would have to be my Contemporary Britain Class. The professor is phenomenal. He makes everything so incredibly interesting that it feels more like an hour class rather than three. He allows us to ask any question we have keeping a completely open mind. Things that I have learned so far include:
- If the Queen chooses to marry she has the choice to name her husband King but usually does not. This is the case of Queen Elizabeth right now because she is married to Philip the Duke of Edinburgh. (A good thing she didn't too, a lot of Brits thing he's a huge jerk and he's cheated on the Queen!!)
- If there is a descendant that becomes King (like Charles and William will) and they marry, their wives will be Queen of England. However, they will never rule because they are not of the bloodline. (I still need to ask what is going to come of Camilla then.... but hopefully Kate Middleton will be William's Queen)
- There is going to be a general election in the time that we are here. Meaning there will be a new Prime Minister
- The Royal Family does not vote
- Great Britain does not have a written Constitution!
- British people are referred to as subjects (not citizens) because of the Monarchy
- And many, many more things!
Our tour guide that is with us on the program has promised to tell us about certain events where we can go to actually see the Queen! I am very excited for this because I think she looks like an adorable, little pocketsized Grandma :)
I think that is all, we booked our Spring Break to Athens, Rome and Santorini today, so excitement is in the air! I will keep you posted!
Answer to the question: The Royal family's last name is WINDSOR!!! They changed it to this in 1917!

I'm at Hogwarts!
Our adventure at Kings Cross was a complete blast! When we got there we decided we should grab a bite to eat and seeing as there were burger places around the choice was quite easy. When we went to get in line at Fine Burger Co. (pause for reaction) this nice British man says, "ladies did you not see the woman handing out 2 pound coupons?" And of course we hadn't seen her but we took his directions and went looking for her. After about 5 minutes of no luck we returned to the burger place feeling a bit foolish. But when he saw we didn't have coupons he stands up and says, "You didn't find her? No worries I'll go!" He jumps up takes off in a sprint toward where he pointed us earlier. He left his food, his bag and us looking completely stunned. When we finally saw him returning it was from the other direction that he had started in, meaning he ran the complete circle around and came back to us holding 3 coupons in his hand. We were of course completely grateful but still quite a bit shocked, we couldn't really start laughing as hard as we wanted to until he finished eating and left, wishing us a fantastic stay in London! That was one of the nicest guys I think I'll ever meet haha.
I don't have too much more to report quite yet. Today was just a whirlwind of a fantastic time. Tomorrow is Thursday which means my weekend has already started seeing as though I only have class Monday- Wednesday. So I will have much more to report soon.
Oh and to Emily and Teresa, don't be too jealous that I got through to Hogwarts. I'm sure you will too!!

High Tea and The Start of Another Week
Hello again,
This last week brought a lot of fun. We got to experience the English tradition, High Tea at The Gore Hotel. It was a blast! We all got dressed up and went to this amazingly fabulous old hotel. Everything seemed to be accented with gold, there were candles everywhere and the wait staff was great. We got there not really knowing what to expect but as soon as they set down the pots of tea the trays of food followed. Oh. My. Gosh! It was amazing! They gave us 4 plates with 3 different levels of different sweets and sandwiches. Everything was so proper and tasty we all felt a little out of our elements but it was a blast. I ate waaaaaaaaaay too much, but it was so good! Their tea specialty is a scone that you split in half and put jelly and a large dollop of cream on each top. It was so rich but so fantastic. It was definitely one of the best things I have tasted so far.
This last weekend it was welcome back weekend at Imperial College, which is the college we are associated with. We got to go to the pub and their little dance club for a small cover and spend the night there with all the British students. Let me tell you, these are some smart kids! We were standing in the back of the pub area and saw a group of kids playing some sort of drinking game but in the middle of the table someone had set their magazine down that read, I Science. And Lindsey also heard a kid talking about one of the classes they were taking this spring, it was Fluid Mechanics.... I don't even know what that would mean. But anyways, we had a great time. It turns out British college students are pretty interested in getting to know Americans. We spent the rest of the night dancing in the little dance club area and the music really brought me back. We danced to some Backstreet Boys and some other great older hits.
Yesterday was an amazing and quite spontaneous day! Alyssa, Karen, Lindsey and I set out after a short time at Petticoat Market to go and ride the London Eye. Well when we finally figured out the tube station and the changes we had to make to get there (because on Sundays only like half the tubes run) we walked up to the London Eye ticket center only to see that this week is the only week out of the year that it is closed.. haha. But don't worry, we ended up going to the London Sea Aquarium and that was absolutely fabulous. We got to see a bunch of sharks, turtles and seahorses. We ended the day with some dinner on Kensington High Street which is just down from our flat. We found an amazing and cheap Chinese place. It was almost just like China Star haha.
Classes have begun again for this week. Today's discussion consisted of British stereotypes and American stereotypes. It was completely fascinating hearing these things from a British perspective. I also learned the difference between the United Kingdom and Great Britain. This is good for all of you that are coming to visit so write this down:
Great Britain = England, Scotland and Wales
United Kingdom = England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Alright that is all for now, we are going to a dinner and play in Piccadilly Circus tomorrow night, so I'll have much more to tell soon!

The classes have begun....
Hello again,
Well we are done with our first "week" of classes. I only have class Monday-Wednesday so that's pretty amazing. The classes seem like they are going to be pretty interesting, my contemporary art class will be completely over my head but my literature brings me right back.
We have been keeping pretty busy, we needed to go and get some actual groceries a couple days ago and I got about 4 microwave dinners that I thought would be like a lean cuisine. Boy was I wrong.. haha apparently their frozen dinners mean, thaw for 12 hours and then put in the oven for 20 minutes. So, so much for a speedy lunch or dinner! The funny story about grocery shopping is that when I was standing waiting for Karen to get some apples a woman walked past me and her large Chanel bag got stuck on my basket... my jaw almost dropped as I began to apologize haha. She was perfectly nice about it and just kept on going.
Last night we went on a historic pub crawl with 14 other people on the program and one guide. We had a BLAST! In the second pub we met some really nice British guys who were on their own historic pub crawl but instead of going to three like us... they were on number 208 haha, don't worry they started last year. They talked to us and gave us a bunch of tips of places where to go and where not to go. They were also soooo cute (sorry Vince hehe). Anyways the pubs we went to were in some of the other extremely rich areas of London. To buy a flat near the second pub we went to you would need 20 million pounds (over 35 million dollars). Drinks are much more expensive here than in the states, we have all been drinking cider because it tastes like apple juice, it is about 3.45 pounds meaning about 6 dollars for one drink. Needless to say that will not be happening very often haha.
We have become quite good on the tube and actual road it to a different part of London called Covent Garden. This was an adorable place with a very nice market. When we were walking through we actually came upon a place that was every kids dream. It was a candy and cupcake store that sold the most amazing things. It looked like everything was fake because they were so fancy. We bought two to split between four of us. Lindsey and I had Apple Raspberry and Karen and Alyssa got Double Chocolate. I will tray and upload some pictures of this place because it was a dream land. The pigeons here were a little bit too friendly for my liking.. they would go under our legs and around our table trying to get scraps. I have come to realize they are the squirrels of England.
A couple nights ago Lindsey and I were craving a little taste of home and decided to go to Pizza Hut that is no too far away. It is also one of the cheaper places to eat around here. We sat down and ordered a large margarita (cheese and sauce) pizza and a couple of sodas. There was this tiny little women sitting next to us who looked at the pizza when it arrived and looked at us and then back at the pizza and finally said "you two surely cannot eat all this pizza, some for home?" Lindsey and I just laughed and assured her we would take some home..... but we finished it haha. How very American of us :) It was amazing it tastes just like home.
Tomorrow no one has any class so I think we will do some exploring. I will keep you updated :)

We are Learning...
So as we continue on in London we are learning so much more. Today we got oyster cards, which allow us to ride the tube and the buses. We still haven't yet so that is for another day. We got a 3 and a half hour bus tour yesterday which took us to all the main attractions. We got to see Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abbey and a bunch of other really amazing places. It was so cold with the wind coming off of the river Thames. We took some really great pictures as we froze. Our tour guide was absolutely amazing and pointed out several of the Harry Potter hotspots.. which as you all know is right up my alley.
We got to see Gringotts, the bridge that Voldemort and his Death Eaters destroy in book 6, and the entrance to Diagon Alley. We are really hoping if beg that the tour guide we are associated with will organize a Harry Potter Tour.
Another amazing thing that was pointed out to us was this pizzeria down the street about 3 blocks from us where Princess Diana brought William and Harry for pizza. We are definitely going to get pizza there and just maybe we will be sitting in her booth!
We spent the majority of the day in Harrods, which basically made me want to win the lottery and spend it all in one place. It was the largest store I had ever seen that housed so many expensive items. We walked past the clearance jewelry, which were still in cases, and the cheapest thing i saw was 190ish pounds.... meaning almost 300 dollars. People were just walking around and shopping like it was nothing. I was kind of hoping to see a celeb in there doing some post-holiday shopping but no luck yet.
We ate dinner at this amazing pub called the Churchill Arms. It is very common in london for pubs to have small restaurants in the back and this one was Thai food. I had such amazing Pad Thai that I had to save half of it so I can eat it tomorrow between my classes.
This brings me to the beginning of school. While all of you are still on break our classes begin tomorrow. I have two, three hour long classes on Mondays, only one on Tuesdays, and then two again on Wednesdays. This is very nice for traveling and when people come to visit. Tomorrow our last class is being cut short because we are all attending the play Warhorse. Our tour guide told us she would "simply die" if we don't like it. I'm excited to begin a routine but I'm not sure if I know the area well enough to be walking around by myself. I have been so lucky to have an amazing group of girls to find everything with so far.
I think that is all for tonight, I will talk to you soon!

We're Here!
Hello!
So we have arrived in London and are still battling Jetlag... I've never felt this before and let me tell you, it is not fun. I woke up last night London time 11:54 pm, meaning it was 6:54 pm and you were all eating dinner. I was WIDE awake and could not fall back asleep for 2-3 hours. It was rough but I got through it and I at least have more sleep than I did yesterday. The plane ride was relatively good. Very long but everything went according to plan. Today we have a 2 hour walking tour this morning and then an orientation 2 hours after that finishes. I think some of the girls and us are going to get phones and then I need to find a new adapter because mine tried to blow my computer up haha.
We live sandwiched between Dubai royalty and a Dutch embassey, it is quite fancy around here. We can actually see through our windows into one and will probably be doing a bit of spying, they live such fancy lives! It's still pretty cold here but I'm sure its nothing like all the snow and cold I hear you guys are dealing with. I can tell you that I do not miss that but I do miss all of you!
Lindsey and I realized we packed A LOT of stuff but it somehow all fits into our little room so that is good. We haven't ventured out to shop for anything but a little bit of groceries and some bathroom items but everything is raging expensive. The exchange rate is absolutely terrible for us and it makes almost everything double what it would be at home. Pretty soo we are going to have to master the Tube so we can get away from our little rich area and find some deals :)
I think this is it for now, sorry if its kind of all over the place but I love you all and will talk to you soon!
